It's Valentines Day! Remember: Your trailer needs some love also!   We always recommend and encourage regular maintenance on all trailers.  You want to keep the safe and road worthy at all times. Here is a checklist that may help you out.  You can do these yourself  & we keep a wide range of parts and accessories in stock for you!  However, if you don't feel comfortable or do not have the time - just give us a call and we will do it for you!

Regular Inspection:

1. Check Tires:  Inspect tire pressure and look for signs of wear, bulges, or punctures. Rotate tires as recommended by the manufacturer.

2. Inspect Wheel Bearings:  Check wheel bearings for proper lubrication. Repack or replace bearings if necessary.

3. Examine Brakes:  Inspect brake components, including brake pads, drums, and brake lines. Ensure proper functioning and address any issues immediately.

4. Lights and Wiring:  Test all exterior lights, including brake lights, turn signals, and marker lights. Inspect wiring for any damage or loose connections.

5. Coupler and Hitch:  Ensure the coupler is in good condition, and the hitch is secure. Lubricate moving parts and check for any signs of wear.

Periodic Maintenance:

6. Lubricate Moving Parts:  Regularly lubricate hinges, latches, and other moving parts to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation.

7. Check Suspension:  Inspect leaf springs, shackles, and suspension components for wear or damage. Replace any worn-out parts.

8. Inspect Frame and Undercarriage:  Check the trailer frame for rust or corrosion. Address any issues promptly to prevent structural damage.

9. Verify Safety Chains:  Ensure safety chains are in good condition and securely attached. Replace any damaged or worn chains.

10. Examine Flooring:  Check the trailer floor for signs of wear, rot, or damage. Repair or replace damaged sections as needed.

Preventive Measures:

11. Rust Prevention:  Apply rust-resistant coating or paint to vulnerable areas, especially the undercarriage and exposed metal surfaces.

12. Check Suspension Alignment:  Ensure the suspension is properly aligned. Misalignment can cause uneven tire wear and handling issues.

13. Inspect Trailer Jack:  Test the trailer jack for smooth operation. Lubricate gears and ensure it can support the weight of the trailer.

14. Verify Load Capacity:  Confirm that the trailer's load capacity is not exceeded. Overloading can lead to premature wear and structural damage.

Before Long Hauls or Storage:

15. Grease Hitch Ball:  Apply grease to the hitch ball to ensure a smooth connection and reduce friction during towing.

16. Check Emergency Breakaway System:  Test the emergency breakaway system to ensure it activates correctly in case of accidental detachment.

17. Inspect Spare Tire:  Check the spare tire for proper inflation and ensure all necessary tools for changing a tire are on board.

18. Clean and Lubricate Axles:  Clean and lubricate axles to prevent rust and ensure smooth rotation.

Regular and thorough maintenance is crucial for the safety, longevity, and optimal performance of utility trailers. Performing these tasks on a regular schedule will help prevent issues and keep the trailer in top condition.
